In ancient Rome, gaming and gambling were one of the features that everyday citizens could enjoy on a regular basis without fear of persecution or harassment by the government at large. The government of Rome, often a republic and sometimes an empire, was well aware of the effect of gaming and gambling on the community, allowing citizens to enjoy themselves while providing much-needed revenue and taxabe income for its citizens. The wealth of Rome was known from land to land and sea to sea, as consumers and proprietors alike enjoyed economic prosperity throughout the land through much of Rome's history up until its downfall. During Rome's heyday gaming and gambling were quite popular and took up much of the average Roman citizens time and efforts. The social aspect of gaming was especially attractive in an age before television, radio or Internet. Although paper and print did exist, the circulation of newspapers was still somewhat primitive at this time, and information sharing and fellowship was nearly always found in social groupings.
As dominant civilizations changed hands from age to age, and era to era, the laws and customs changed. As Rome fell other powers and nations gained notoriety and their laws became the law of the land. Many of these new powers and governments forbade the playing of games of chance, forbidding gambling altogether and ensuring that users were not allowed to come together in the activity of gambling. In the modern day, gaming and gambling have made an extreme comeback, especially in recent years with the advent of online poker rooms and casinos. The wealth of Rome was nothing compared to the wealth of the modern day, when the average user has extreme amounts of discretionary income available to invest into gaming and games of chance.
While ancient times may have sported tremendous popularity for gaming and games of chance, they can hardly compete with the modern day for the amount of gamers and the popularity of gambling in general, evidenced by the amount of assorted online poker rooms, casinos and gaming websites. Even the amount of blogs and informational articles that support gaming and gaming websites such as online poker rooms exist in vast proportions on the Internet, as more and more gamers and poker room patrons write and speak about their knowledge of the game and how to play. Winning gamers especially have left their mark on history, as more and more retired and successful poker players leave behind stories of the glory days of the ups and downs and rise and fall of poker rooms and casinos.
