Predicting what these more experienced players are going to do and how they're going to play is somewhat more difficult than playing against new players, but is generally more rewarding due to the fact that there is generally more money at stake.  Watching, waiting and understanding your opponent are essential keys to eventual victory.

Waiting for Your Opponent to Make a Mistake

Some will say that it is easy to spot new players at the tables, as they tend to make all manner of mistakes that only new players will make.  Learning these mistakes and the most common types of mistakes that these players make can help the poker room player to take full advantage of  these new players who are basically simply a mark for any skilled player to take advantage of anyway.  Knowing these mistakes in and out and waiting for them to be made is basically the regular strategy of poker players around the world.  But this tactic can be adapted to any player, not just new players.  Even the most experienced players tend to make mistakes that they are known for as well as tendencies to play in certain styles.  Predicting what these more experienced players are going to do and how they're going to play is somewhat more difficult than playing against new players, but is generally more rewarding due to the fact that there is generally more money at stake.  Watching, waiting and understanding your opponent are essential keys to eventual victory.

This focus on your players abilities and play style is no different than playing against a new player, except that the player has to focus more on what the experienced player is doing and the reasons for acting in this manner.  After studying the poker player for some time, it can become readily apparent that the player falls into one of several pre-described stereotypes.  Aggressive players are easily defined by the play style, as are defensive players, who are exactly the opposite of aggressive players and try to defend their bankroll fiercely against all comers.  While there are variations in different extremes of these types of players, it is important to understand that the play styles between certain players are generally pretty similar, once the player is familiar with one style, it is an easy matter to adapt that familiarity to other play styles that are similar.

Knowing that your opponent will eventually make a mistake and knowing that you can manipulate the game to be in a position to take advantage of this mistake is one thing.  Being able to patiently restrain yourself and wait for the mistake is a completely different matter.  This ability to wait patiently until your opponent cracks under pressure is the defining quality of professional poker players.
