That game of Texas
Hold'em poker is so ridiculously popular after all the exposure on
television and other forms of entertainment media that it has drawn a great
deal of new players from all walks of life, a positive sign for the future of
poker in general. This exposure is good
for poker and poker players as well, as a constant influx of new players is
required for any new action to exist.
While existing and returning players can keep the game alive, it is new
players that present the lifeblood of the game of poker. Without these new players coming in and
playing games such as Texas Hold'em, there could be no supporting
infrastructure in the poker and gaming industry for veterans to take advantage
of.
But with all these new
players come inexperienced and simply green players who have no clue what
they're doing and believe that what they have seen on television is the trick
and the technique for winning. The truth
is, most of the plays seen on television are only the most dramatic and spectacular
plays, as the more mundane day to day grinding it out is largely glossed over
in the short attention span world of broadcast television. With so many players joining the ranks of Texas Hold'em
players, it is important to point out some basic strategy.
It is important not to even
consider wagering on the strength of your hand until it has begun to shape
up. The hand that you originally start
out with will be far different from the hand that you end up with at the end of
the game. This is the very nature of
Texas Hold'em and the reason it is such a difficult game to master. With the use of the community cards, referred
to as the flop, the turn, and the river, the building of your hand takes
several steps and rounds of wagering and dealing.
New players have a tendency
to wager big early in the game simply because they have a few good cards. These cards will mean nothing when the rest
of the cards are played and don't have any practical use for the player. Only when a significant portion of the cards
are visible, including the community cards, can the player began to ascertain
the strength of his hand and wager appropriately.
